Who Wouldn't Want to Spend 5 Years With Nick Saban?

When Saban doesn't get a recruit, he in no way acts (or looks) like a spoiled seven-year-old, deprived of his "woobie."

As few may know, yesterday was the first day of spring practice for the Ole Miss Rebels, which was open to the public. It just so happens that somehow Beast/Child 5-Star Hargrave recruit, Bobby Massie was in attendance, on the sidelines with the Rebel proletariat.

cameraphone-o-graphic evidence of the aforementioned beast (provided by crazed Rebel fan)

Naturally, Bobby was assaulted with fanboy questions. However, one question in particular yielded some interesting bits of tid:

He was asked to give a good Nick Saban recruiting story, and he had a pretty good one to say the least. Bobby said he called Coach Saban the night before signing day to let him know that he was going to sign with Ole Miss. Bobby did not even inform the Ole Miss staff that he was going to be a Rebel until the night before signing day, per Bobby, but he did say, "I had a pretty good idea where I was going in December."

Anyway, Bobby calls Nick and Coach Saban stops him before he tells where he is going and said this, "Bobby, do not even tell me where you are going, because if you are not going to Alabama I am turning you into the NCAA. You know you have a chance to start at Alabama at right tackle as a sophomore, and nobody would turn that down unless they did something illegal."

Bobby was stunned. He said he just listened to Coach Saban rant and never said another word about it. He was offended to say the least. That is why he made such a scene at the press conference when he threw the Alabama hat on the ground and put on an Ole Miss hat.

"A chance at starting Right Tackle as a Sophomore with the ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE"!!! Excuse me while I soil myself. How did Massie ever resist that tricky little leprechaun?

Damn it's a great time to be a college football fan in the South. Especially with Dr. Evil living and working just down I-20/59. Even though Nick closed out with one of the strongest signing days in the nation, apparently the world is not enough to satisfy the Prince of Darkness.

[Note: I've confirmed the validity of this "rumor" with the source, as it was told, by Bobby, to a dozen or so fans/media at the first spring practice.]

Update, March 3: According to Ian Rapaport, Bobby denies it...Kinda. He admits he's read the post, but he doesn't go into detail about what is true or false. He does admit talking to Saban the night before signing day (like it says above), and he does admit that he never told Saban he was going to Ole Miss (like it says above). He just says "my words got switched around," so take that for what it's worth.

Sounds to me like someone at Ole Miss asked Massie to kindly "shut up" and put this in the past. I'm thinking young Bobby just learned a valuable lesson in fan/media relations.

  1. The Saban-envy continues. Once again, chalk up another moral victory for Erik's Mississippi Rebel-necks.

Congratulations on stealing a recruit away from Daddy Nick. I'm sure to you, that means more than actually BEATING HIM on the field and BEATING HIM on the recruiting front.

I think the stuff they put in your guys' chew (or whatever tobacco product the pot-belly Mississippians place in their mouth), in the state of Mississippi, actually does effect the brain.

Keep up the good/envious work with your EDSBS wannabe blog site.

  2. Love the story. He's projecting the arrogance of his fan base now. They think they will never lose a recruit, and as he said, they can't understand why anyone would turn that down.

  4. I will not hold my breath for your comments on the day when the facts come out about his recruitment and the "tire distributor" who was involved in his recruitment for Ole Miss...there was another recruit from Hargrave that also signed with OM...Hmmm...could said "tire distributor" be from his hometown? I am sure Saban did say those things but I am also sure it did not go exactly as Massie stated...I am sure he told him he knew what was going on illegally with the "millionaire" in MS but then went into his sales job talking about his program. Like I said, we will see who gets the last laugh in this situation. Enough people, including many who are with other schools other than Bama and OM, know what happened here and no, it is not because Massie did not go to Bama but just the facts on why he went to OM...replacing Oher got Massie's attention but tire profits clinched the deal.

  5. Butch,

Do you really think Massie would be dumb enough to tell this story to fans if there was truth to the fact that he was illegally recruited?

I know he went to Hargrave and all, but that's pretty damn dumb. First I've heard of this "Millionaire Tire Baron."

    Please, enlighten us further.

  6. Why would anybody want to start at RT in the SEC when they could easily start at LT in the SEC.

NFL LT's are the 2nd highest paid players after QB's. If I were Massie, I'd have said "fuck being a RT" as well.

  7. Not to question your credentials, but is there an actual link to a story?

    ReplyDelete
  8. There is no link. It's copied and pasted from an Ole Miss insider/mod on an private Ole Miss message board.

Someone regurgitated it on tigerdroppings and I'm guessing that lead to it getting out to several blogs.

  9. Butch, don't worry. Tire Man doesn't win every battle. For instance, he couldn't match the going rate to keep Dwayne Rudd and Deshea Townsend from heading to Tuscaloosa. Apparently Memphis Bama Booster $ is bigger than Batesville Tire $. Oh well, you win some, you lose some. But, look on the bright side. Business seems to be booming over in Gadsden for you guys. Cheer up, Charlie Brown.

  13. I'd just like to say one thing: I spoke to some of Bobby's family and they said 98% of your blog is a lie.

They had nothing by positive things to say about Coach Saban and how he was recruited. The deciding factor was the chance to play left tackle...you know, the money spot on the OL.

Btw, I have passed this blog on to some people who are looking into a slander suit. If you didnt already know, the SEC and its schools are starting to crack down on this type of thing.

  14. Samuel,

Gadsden? You know how you can tell when someone is making something up? They always go back to what they know.

What do we know about Gadsden? That is where the lies came from about Gene Jelks. The only reason you arent saying Memphis is because Logan Young is dead.

If we had boosters in Gadsden willing to pay for recruits Carnell would never have run for auburn.

  15. Noway Saban said "You know you have a chance to start at Alabama at right tackle as a sophomore". Saban is all about open competition and has never told a single player that he is guaranteed a job. Or, for that matter, doesn't have a job his freshman year. In every other recruits quotes, you see something like "Saban said I can come in and compete for a starting job." I am sure he told Massie he would have an opportunity to compete for a starting job at either tackle position. He would never tell any recruit that some other guy has his job already (i.e., D.J. Fluker). Massie probably got scared when Saban told he had to compete for the job and, instead, went to a place where he knew he could start no matter what. This story was obviously made up, and as stated by Erik, was pulled from a premium Ole Miss board. Well, dam, since it was premium, the story must have been true, right?

  16. I agree with Michael above and so does this kid...

"Maclin, ranked as the No. 11 outside linebacker in the country by Scout.com, attended the Tide Junior Day and got to meet with coach Saban. “He’s real and doesn’t tell you things you want to hear,” he said. “Coach Saban doesn’t take no crap at all. That’s what makes you better. You gotta go hard all the time with him.” Justin Maclin

  17. Let me put this out there: I'm a huge Ole Miss homer.

Let me say though that Saban can flat out recruit. Who cares what his tactics are? They freaking work, alright?

With this situation, Massie had two schools which have proven they can produce a first round LT (Oher and Smith) going after him and the one with the thinner line won. Plain and simple. Now, why did he toss the Bama hat at his presser? Probably because he was fed up with obsessive Bama fans e-slobbin' on his knob and knew that something like that would really rile them up.

    Looks like he was right.

I don't know how the slander rule applies to bloggers *some of which are relentless to get us TRUE FANS the news we crave, the others like yourself can slither under a rock and spit fire at other teams and feel better about themselves* but I really wish Saban would see this and press some charges. Not only is this a piece of sh*t attempt to make CNS look bad but your "source" flat out denied A)notiying CNS the night before and B) that CNS ever said ANYTHING AT ALL. Great job reporting. When you guys end up 2nd....or 3rd....or 4th in the West then write something else about CNS and see how far it gets you. It's people like you that made Trent love us. What did Nick Saban really say to recruit Bobby Massie after Massie spurned Alabama?

Posted by Ian R. Rapoport -- The Birmingham News April 02, 2009 11:50 PM

    Categories: Football, Recruiting

Bobby Massie... not sure what the fuss is all about.
A few days ago, I was reading one of my favorite blogs, which pointed me to another blog, which quoted Alabama coach Nick Saban saying some pretty interesting, kinda bizarre things.

Citing a blurb by a reporter for Ole Miss' Scout.com site, the blog reported that Saban had some choice words for recruit Bobby Massie when Massie famously spurned the Tide and picked the Rebels. The site said Saban told Massie, "if you are not going to Alabama I am turning you into the NCAA."

Cue controversy. I admit, it sounded odd. Coaches really don't talk like that, especially this one. But then, some coaches do say strange things. What to do?

So tonight, I called Massie to see what really happened: "Man... what you saw on that blog wasn't even true," Massie told me.

Oh. Wait, what? But I just read it on that blog... And the blog said it checked with its source -- the OM reporter -- who corroborated it. Well, apparently, Massie disagrees. Of course, he's not the only one who noticed.

"I don't even know where that came from," said Massie, the five-star tackle. "Because I was at Ole Miss practice over this past weekend, and I was talking to somebody about my decision to come to Ole Miss. Then I come back here up to Hargrave, and I see everybody on Facebook, phone calls from everywhere, talking about that blog site. People were hitting me up on Facebook, and that (stuff) didn't even happen. I don't know where that came from."

What did he think happened? "My words got switched around," he said.

What was Saban's reaction when Massie told him he becoming a Rebel? One problem: Massie said he never told Saban.

"He never knew," Massie said. "He never knew I was signing with Ole Miss. I talked to him the day before signing day, but in his mind, I was coming to Alabama."

Massie hasn't spoken to Saban since. And as far as he's concerned, he'd like all this to end.

"It's over with," Massie said. "I signed with Ole Miss and not anybody else. So, there's nothing to talk about. I got nothing to say about him, he's got nothing to say about me. I signed with Ole Miss on signing day. That's it."

    So there you go...

  29. What I've learned from this thread:

-Bama fans don't know the differences between "slander" and "libel," nor do they know what constitutes as reasonable grounds for either (here's a hint, some "he said she said" of little consequense over the FUCKING INTERNET isn't it).
-Bama fans cannot stand the idea that Alabama cannot do have or do everything it dreams of. If Bama lands a recruit, its because they're Bama and everybody wants to be there. If somebody else lands a recruit, they cheated.
-Bobbie Massie really, really hurt y'all's feelings with the whole "tossing the hat on the ground thing."

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Ghost of Jay Cutler,

How about we just call it defamation, and reasonable grounds for either is in the eye of the beholder. Btw, IMO, this article defamed both Nick Saban and Bobby Massie. Also, I wouldnt say its of "little consequense" given the fact that it has been talked about on state radio as if it was totally true.

What I have learned from your post is this: You do not know the difference between fans complaining about a total fabrication (what most Alabama fans are doing) and crying over where a recruit decided to go to school (what your mind has conjured up).

That's right come to this knucklehead's defense. You were basking in the warm and fuzzy afterglow last year when Finebaum was laughing with you; but now that you're the butt end of the joke it isn't that funny now is it?

  32. You have your head stuck in the sand if you aren't clear on why Saban made that comment. Even regular joe's like me knew three days before signing day that Ole Miss was funneling money via a Batesville booster to the Hargrave coach and Bobbie Massie. The consensus from people who follow recruiting from half a dozen fan bases is that Bobbie Massie is Ole Miss's Albert Means. Word among SEC coaches is that the total cash outlay was between $60,000-$80,000. Hope OM gets their money's worth far more than Bama did with means. By the way, lets not forget that Houston Nutt offered Lynn Lang a job and $80,000 (to be planted under a bridge in Memphis by Danny Nutt) for Albert Means. That's not hearsay, that's on the record in the Logan Young federal trial. Your boy Houston knows how to play the game, Erik.

I love how so many of you are citing the blog.al.com article complete with Bobbie Massie quotes as if what Yancy reported wasn't also supposedly "straight from the horse's mouth." Have you ever imagined that these players say whatever they think the reporter wants them to hear? I'm not suggesting either story to be the truth, I'm simply saying that the source is suspect at best.

    Stump said:

"I wouldnt say its of "little consequense" given the fact that it has been talked about on state radio as if it was totally true."

Well, I would. You obviously don't know what "of little consequence" means. Nothing has or will come of this Yancy story, meaning that there were NO consequences. Also, while suggesting that Nick Saban had threatened to blackmail a recruit may be "defamation," it's no more defaming than me saying things like "Nick Saban punched an orphan" or "Nick Saban is a bigot." OH NO! I guess Nick Saban is going to go after me now!

Do you want to know what exactly is going to come of this? Well, here's your answer:

    N O T H I N G!

For you Bama fans to think that Nick Saban and the SEC en masse worry about reports of clandestine dealings posted on internet message boards and/or give a shit about your stupid little fucking crusade you're fighting against Erik only proves that you're all abunch of delusional, self-important clowns.

Nick Saban ain't no saint. No SEC head coach is. Why is this so Goddamn hard for you fucking rubes to live with?

"Well, I would. You obviously don't know what "of little consequence" means. Nothing has or will come of this Yancy story, meaning that there were NO consequences."

If, as you say, there were NO consequences, why even report, and I use that term loosely, the story? Does Erik lead such a shallow life that his thoughts and stories mean nothing? Is that what you are suggesting? That Erik is "NOTHING!"? If so, I'm starting to agree. And, according to published reports from a true reporter and Bobby Massie himself, he is also a liar.

"Also, while suggesting that Nick Saban had threatened to blackmail a recruit may be 'defamation,' it's no more defaming than me saying things like 'Nick Saban punched an orphan" or "Nick Saban is a bigot.'"

Well, simply -- as you did -- saying Nick Saban punched an orphan or is a bigot is just that; saying. When you start quoting sources, as Erik did and continues to do, and putting it out there for the world to see, you are taking it to another level, a defaming level.

"For you Bama fans to think that Nick Saban and the SEC en masse worry about reports of clandestine dealings posted on internet message boards and/or give a shit about your stupid little fucking crusade you're fighting against Erik only proves that you're all abunch of delusional, self-important clowns."

And what about your crusade? Your defense of Erik and his defaming, lie filled, blog entry. Are you a delusional, self-important clown, or are you, as you described Erik, simply "NOTHING!"? Given your display of ignorance here, I think you fall into the latter category. Congrats

  40. "When you start quoting sources, as Erik did and continues to do, and putting it out there for the world to see, you are taking it to another level, a defaming level."

Linking to something isn't defamation, dolt. DOZENS of different blogs have run similar stories on this very issue. You don't fucking know what you're talking about.

To anyone who isn't an Alabama fan:
Buy or Sell - If this were involving Ole Miss and another school (LSU, Auburn, Florida, etc), this would have barely been a blip on the radar.

Personally, I'm buying it in fucking bulk. Bama fans are the champions of crying foul over NOTHING.
